  John R. Kender is Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University.His research interests are in the use of statistical and semantic methods for navigatingthrough collections of videos, particularly those showing human activities.He received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1980, specializingin computer vision and artificial intelligence, and he was the first professorhired in its Robotics Institute. Since 1981, he has been one of the founding facultyof the Department of Computer Science of Columbia University.   Dr. John R. Smith is Senior Manager, Intelligent Information Systems Dept, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, leading research and development in: Multimedia, Image/video analytics, Exploratory computer vision and Biometrics. Dr. Smith is principal investigator for the IBM Multimedia Analysis and Retrieval System (IMARS) project. Previously, Dr. Smith led IBM's participation in MPEG-7 / MPEG-21 standards and served as a Chair of the MPEG Multimedia Description Schemes Group and co-project Editor of MPEG-7 Standard. Dr. Smith recently completed two terms as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Multimedia. He is Fellow of IEEE.

  Shih-Fu Chang

  Columbia University

  Shih-Fu Chang is a leading researcher in multimedia information retrieval, computer vision, signal processing, and machine learning. His pioneering work set trends in important areas such as content-based image search, video recognition, image authentication, hashing for large image database, and novel application of visual search in brain machine interface and mobile communication. Impact of his work can be seen in more than 300 peer-reviewed publications (with 31,000 citations), best paper awards, 25 issued patents, and technologies licensed to six companies. He has been recognized with the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award, ACM Multimedia SIG Technical Achievement Award, IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, and IBM Faculty Award. For his accomplishments in education, he received the Great Teacher Award from the Society of Columbia Graduates. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine from 2006-8. In his current capacity as Senior Vice Dean of Columbia Engineering School, he plays a key role in strategic planning, special research initiatives, and faculty development. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and IEEE.

  Jiebo Luo received the B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1989 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, in 1995. He was a Senior Principal Scientist with the Kodak Research Laboratories in Rochester before joining the Computer Science Department, University of Rochester in Fall 2011. His research interests include image processing, machine learning, computer vision, social multimedia data mining, biomedical informatics, and ubiquitous computing. He has authored over 180 technical papers and holds over 60 U.S. patents. He has been actively involved in numerous technical conferences, including recently serving as the General Chair of ACM CIVR 2008, Program Co-Chair of IEEE CVPR 2012 and ACM Multimedia 2010, Area Chair of IEEE ICASSP 2009–2011, ICIP 2008–2011, and ICCV 2011. He has served on the editorial boards of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PATTERN ANALYSIS AND MACHINE INTELLIGENCE, IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MULTIMEDIA, IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS FOR VIDEO TECHNOLOGY, Pattern Recognition, Machine Vision and Applications, and the Journal of Electronic Imaging.   Susanne Boll

  Dr. Boll earned a Diplom with distinction in computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt and a doctorate with distinction at the Technical University of Vienna, Austria. With Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Klas as her advisor, Dr. Boll completed my doctoral thesis, “Towards Multimedia Document Models for Reuse and Adaptation.” Key elements of the work from her dissertation and research were accepted into the Proceedings of the IFIP Conference on Data Semantics in 1999 and selected for publication in the renowned journal ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications. Dr. Boll is Associate Editor in Chief of the editorial board of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Multimedia Magazine and associate editor of the Springer Multimedia Tools and Applications (MTAP). Dr. Boll is a very active member of the scientific community and am a member of several working groups in her field of research. Dr. Boll is a member of the ACM, the GI and the IEEE Computer Society. During the last 10 years, her scientific results have been published in extremely competitive peer-reviewed international conferences, such as CHI, Pervasive, and MobileHCI, each having competitive acceptance rates ranging from 13% to 22%, as well as internationally recognized journals. Google Scholar’s calculation shows that Dr. Boll have achieved a Hirsch Index of 24. Overall Dr. Boll have published more than 180 articles in competitive conferences, workshops, journals and books; served as a member on the technical program committees of more than 150 renowned conferences and workshops; and successfully acquired, led, and managed 27 national and international projects.

  Winston Hsu

  Dr. Winston Hsu is an active researcher dedicated to novel algorithms and systems for large-scale image/video retrieval, social media mining/ recommendation, multimedia analytics, and mobile and cloud-based multimedia applications. He has been recognized with technical awards and best paper awards in multimedia research community. He is keen to realizing advanced researches towards business deliverables. Other major contributions include mobile visual search solutions, image/video reranking, image classification models (e.g., Columbia374), and large-scale multimedia ontologies (e.g., LSCOM). See more details in his Google Citations. He delivered keynote speech and lectured several state-of-the-art tutorials in top conferences. He is in the technical committee for top conferences (e.g., ACM Multimedia, SIGIR, and WWW) and the organizing committee for ACM Multimedia and ICME. He is on the Editorial Board for IEEE Multimedia Magazine and JMM. He is an Associate Professor in CSIE & GINM, National Taiwan University and the founder of MiRA (Multimedia indexing, Retrieval, and Analysis) Research Group, in Communication and Multimedia Lab (CMLab). He received his Ph.D. (2007) degree from Columbia University, New York, under the supervision of Prof. Shih-Fu Chang. Before that, he worked for years as a founding engineer in the multimedia software company, CyberLink Corp., where experiencing Engineer, Project Leader, and R&D Manager. He was experienced with software product/service shipping processes. He is both ACM and IEEE Senior Member. He is recently awarded 2011 Ta-You Wu Memorial Award, a national and prestigious recognition for young researchers, and 2013 National Outstanding IT Elite Award (資訊月傑出資訊人才獎), governmental recognition for the contributions in industry-academia collaborations.

  Paul Natsev

  Apostol (Paul) Natsev is a software engineer and manager in the video content analysis group at Google Research. Previously, he was a research staff member and manager of the multimedia research group at IBM Research from 2001 to 2011. He received a master's degree and a Ph.D. in computer science from Duke University, Durham, NC, in 1997 and 2001, respectively. Dr. Natsev's research interests span the areas of image and video analysis and retrieval, machine perception, large-scale machine learning and recommendation systems. He is an author of more than 80 publications and his research has been recognized with several awards.

  Rogerio Feris

  IBM TJ Watson

  Rogerio Feris is a research scientist at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, New York, and an Affiliate Associate Professor at University of Washington. Dr. Feris joined IBM in 2006 after receiving a PhD in computer science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Feris have also worked as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University, teaching courses on Visual Recognition and Search and Automatic Video Surveillance. His publications have appeared in major computer vision/graphics conferences and journals, including ICCV, CVPR, SIGGRAPH, and PAMI. Among other professional activities, Dr. Feris has co-chaired the first and second workshop on parts and attributes. Dr. Feris received several honors and awards, including a recent IBM Master inventor honor and a prestigious IBM Outstanding Innovation Achievement Award in 2011. In addition to working on core research, Dr. Feris had a one-year assignment at IBM Global Technology Services as a senior software engineer to help the productization of the IBM Smart Surveillance System.

  Dr. Rui is currently a Senior Director and Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research Asia, leading research effort in the areas of multimedia search and mining, knowledge mining, and social computing. From 2010 to 2012, he was Senior Director at Microsoft Asia-Pacific R&D (ARD) Group in charge of China Innovation. From 2008 to 2010, he was Director of Microsoft Education Product in China. From 2006 to 2008, he was a founding member of ARD and its first Director of Strategy. From 1999 to 2006, he was Researcher and Senior Researcher of the Multimedia Collaboration group at Microsoft Research, Redmond, USA. A Fellow of IEEE, IAPR and SPIE, and a Distinguished Scientist of ACM, Rui is recognized as a leading expert in his research areas. He holds 56 issued US and international patents.   Lexing Xie is Senior Lecturer in the Research School of Computer Science at the Australian National University. She was research staff member at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in New York from 2005 to 2010, and adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University 2007-2009. She received B.S. from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, all in Electrical Engineering. Her research interests are in applied machine learning, multimedia, social media. Her recent projects are on multimedia content analysis, social media tracking and recommendation, visual semantics, large-scale image and video search. Lexing's research has received five best student paper and best paper awards between 2002 and 2011, and a Grand Challenge Multimodal Prize at ACM Multimedia 2012. She was the 2005 IBM Research Josef Raviv Memorial Postdoc fellow in Computer Science and Engineering. She currently serves an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, and ACM Transactions on Multimedia.   Nicu Sebe is a professor in the University of Trento, Italy, where he is the dean of the doctoral school in ICT and is leading the research in the areas of multimedia information retrieval and human-computer interaction in computer vision applications. He was involved in the organization of the major conferences and workshops addressing the computer vision and human-centered aspects of multimedia information retrieval, among which as a General Co-Chair of the IEEE Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition Conference, FG 2008, ACM International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR) 2007 and 2010.   Cees G.M. Snoek received the M.Sc. degree in business information systems (2000) and the Ph.D. degree in computer science (2005) both from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is currently a director of QUVA, the joint research lab of Qualcomm and the University of Amsterdam on deep learning and computer vision. He is also a principal engineer at Qualcomm and an associate professor at the University of Amsterdam. He was previously a Visiting Scientist at Informedia, Carnegie Mellon University, USA (2003), Fulbright Junior Scholar at UC Berkeley’s Computer Vision Group (2010-2011), and head of R&D at University spin-off Euvision Technologies before it was acquired by Qualcomm (2011-2014). His research interests focus on video and image recognition. He has published over 150 refereed book chapters, journal and conference papers, and serves on the program committee of the major conferences in multimedia and computer vision. Dr. Snoek is the lead researcher of the award-winning MediaMill Semantic Video Search Engine, which is the most consistent top performer in the yearly NIST TRECVID evaluations. He is general co-chair of ACM Multimedia 2016 in Amsterdam, program co-chair for ICMR 2015, co-initiator and co-organizer of the VideOlympics 2007-2009, He is a lecturer of post-doctoral courses given at international conferences and European summer schools. He is a senior member of IEEE and ACM. Dr. Snoek is member of the editorial boards for IEEE MultiMedia and IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. Cees is recipient of an NWO Veni award (2008), a Fulbright Junior Scholarship (2010), an NWO Vidi award (2012), and the Netherlands Prize for ICT Research (2012). All for research excellence.   Dr. Ying-Li Tian is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the City College of New York. She received her PhD from the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1996 and her BS and MS from TianJin University, China in 1987 and 1990. She is experienced in computer vision topics ranging from object recognition, scene understanding, to human behavior analysis, facial expression recognition, gesture recognition, and assistive technology. After she worked in National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, Dr. Tian joined the Robotics Institute in Carnegie Mellon University as a postdoctoral fellow. She focused on automatic facial expression analysis. From 2001 to 2008, Dr. Tian was a research staff member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Hawthorn, New York. She focused on moving object detection, tracking, and event and activity analysis. She was one of the inventors of the IBM Smart Surveillance Solutions (SSS) and was leading the video analytics team. She received the IBM Invention Achievement Awards every year from 2002 to 2007. She also received the IBM Outstanding Innovation Achievement Award in 2007. As an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, she co-taught a course on Automatic Video Surveillance (Spring 2008). Dr. Tian has published more than 130 papers in journals and conferences and has filed more than 30 patents. She is a senior member of IEEE.

  Alex Hauptmann

  Alex Hauptmann is a Principal Systems Scientist in the Carnegie Mellon University Computer Science Department and a faculty member with CMU’s Language Technologies Institute. His research interests have led him to pursue and combine several different areas: man-machine communication, natural language processing, speech understanding and synthesis, machine learning. He worked on speech and machine translation at CMU from 1984-94, when he joined the Informedia project where he developed the News-on-Demand application. Since then he has conducted research on video analysis and retrieval on broadcast news as well as observational video with success documented by outstanding performance in the annual NIST TRECVID video retrieval evaluations. His current research centers on robust analysis of internet-style and surveillance video as large scale.

  Shin’ichi Satoh received the B.E. degree in electronics engineering and the M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in information engineering from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1987, 1989, and 1992, respectively. He joined the National Center for Science Information Systems (NACSIS), Tokyo, Japan, in 1992. He was a visiting scientist at the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, from 1995 to 1997. He has been a Professor at the National Institute of Informatics (NII), Tokyo, Japan, since 2004. He is currently leading the video processing project at NII. His research interests include image processing, video content analysis, and multimedia database.

  Gerald Friedland

  Gerald Friedland studied at Freie Universitaet in Berlin, receiving his master’s degree in 2002 and his doctorate summa cum laude in 2006. He moved to Berkeley for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at ICSI funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The fellowship was extended with additional funds from Appscio Inc. In 2008, he accepted a position as a senior researcher at ICSI. He has received the European Academic Software Award and the IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Service Award. In 2011, he was named associate editor of the year by ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications. He is a co-founder of the IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing and the IEEE Summer School of Semantic Computing and a program co-chair of the International Conference on Multimedia and Expo 2012. In 2009 he won the ACM Multimedia Grand Challenge and in 2011 served as its chair. He leads ICSI’s research efforts in multimedia understanding; his work focuses on audio techniques such as speaker diarization and acoustic event detection and their applications to multimedia content analysis.

  Hari Sundaram

  Hari Sundaram is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois and holds a joint appointment between Computer Science and Advertising. Prior to Illinois, he was an Associate Professor at Arizona State University with appointments in Computer Science and the School of Arts, Media and Engineering; he helped co-found the School of Arts Media and Engineering. He earned his B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (1993), M.S. from Stony Brook University (1995) and Ph.D. from Columbia University (2002), all in Electrical Engineering. Sundaram’s current research is motivated by the challenge: how can we persuade millions of people to adopt behaviors that would be beneficial to them? Example behaviors include: leading healthy lifestyles; reducing individual energy consumption and greater civic engagement. The widespread adoption of these behaviors would lead to large scale societal benefits such as reduced healthcare costs, sustainability and a vibrant community. His research interests lie in large scale network analysis, using smartphones and designing wearable sensors for analyzing human activity, and in computational advertising.

  Chong-Wah Ngo received his Ph.D in Computer Science from the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST). He received his MSc and BSc, both in Computer Engineering, from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. His research interests are in multimedia search and computing. He has been serving the technical program committees of numerous multimedia and information retrieval conferences including ACM Multimedia (MM), ACM SIGIR, International Conf. on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR) and International Conf. on Multimedia and Expo (ICME). In addition, he is an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. on Multimedia, and is on the editorial board of Journal of Multimedia Data Engineering and Management, and Journal of Advances in Multimedia. He is the program track co-chair of ICME 2011, program co-chair of ACM ICIMCS 2011, ACM MMM 2012 and ACM ICMR 2012. He is founding leader of VIREO (VIdeo REtrieval grOup). He also served as the chairman of ACM (Hong Kong Chapter) during 2008 and 2009. Before joining CityU, he was a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. T. C. Pong and Prof Roland Chin in HKUST. He joined the research group ofProf Thomas Huang in Beckman Institute as a post-doctoral visitor for a collaborative project between UIUC and HKUST during 2001. He also worked at Information Technology Institute (ITI) of Singapore in 1996, and as summer intern at Microsoft Research Asia in 1999. He was born in Malaysia (Visit Malaysia and then you will find the smile of people and the smile of nature!). His hometown is at Pekan Nanas (a perfectly peaceful town), Pontian (the southest county in Asia mainland), Johor, Malaysia.   Professor K. SelçukCandan_Selchuk_5512b Candan joined ASU in 1997. K. Selçuk Candan’s primary research interest is in the area of management of non-traditional, heterogeneous, and imprecise (such as multimedia, web, and scientific) data. Database, information retrieval, and multimedia systems emerged addressing the needs of very different application domains. As these domains matured over the years, however, the respective scientific disciplines moved closer. Having noticed this trend of convergence early, Professor Candan followed a research vision tackling the needs of non-traditional data management applications and bridging the gap between multimedia, web, and database research. While the general theme of his research (i.e., addressing the challenges that arise due to heterogeneity and imprecision inherent in applications and modern information management systems) stayed largely the same, through a wide spectrum of cross-disciplinary collaborations (such as collaborations with media and fine arts researchers at Arts, Media, and Engineering program, disability researchers at CUBIC and Foundation for Blind Children, and archaeologists at the School of Human Evolution and Social Change as well as with leading R&D companies, such as NEC Labs America, IBM Almaden Research Center, Telecom Italia Labs, and RAI), over the years, his group’s research had strong impact in diverse domains, from providing efficiency and agility to e-businesses to enabling students who are blind accessing educational materials. His various research projects are funded by a diverse set of sources, including the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and DES/RSA (Rehabilitation Services Administration). He has published over 100 articles and many book chapters. He has also authored nine patents.

  Liangliang Cao is a senior research scientist at Yahoo! Labs. Before joining Yahoo! he was a research staff member at IBM Watson Research Center. Dr. Cao is also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a CSE (computational science and engineering) fellowship and Master’s degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received the best paper award from the International Workshop on Big Data Mining, 2012. He was co-General Chair of Greater New York Area Multimedia and Vision Meeting from 2012 to 2013 and founding chair of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) workshop on Geo-Multimedia.

  Yu-Gang Jiang

  Fudan University

  Yu-Gang Jiang is an associate professor of computer science at Fudan University, Shanghai. He directs Lab for Big Video Data Analytics, focusing on the design of novel algorithms and systems to better understand big video data. He is the lead architect of a few best-performing video analytic systems in the annual U.S. NIST TRECVID evaluation. His visual concept detector libraries VIREO-374 and CU-VIREO374 are widely used resources in the multimedia community. His work has led to many awards, including an "emerging leader in multimedia" award from IBM T.J. Watson Research in 2009, an early career faculty award from Intel and CCF in 2013, and the prestigious 2014 ACM China Rising Star Award. He is an associate editor of Machine Vision and Applications and a program chair of ACM ICMR 2015. He did a PhD in Computer Science at City University of Hong Kong and was a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University. He was a visiting researcher at the University of Amsterdam and Microsoft Research Asia.

  Rainer Lienhart

  University of Augsburg

  Rainer Lienhart is a full professor in the computer science department of the University of Augsburg where he heads the Multimedia Computing Lab (MMC Lab). His group is focusing on all aspects of very large-scale image, video, and audio mining algorithms including feature extraction, image/video search and retrieval, object detection and human pose estimation. The applied algorithm are also analyzed and ported to modern application accelerator cards such as GPUs, MIC, and FPGAs. Currently, he is also the executive director of the Institute for Computer Science at the University of Augsburg. In 2009 he spent his sabbatical at Willow Garage – a robotic company, which is working on laying the groundwork for the industry that will be needed to enable personal robotics applications by investing in open source such as OpenCV and open platform adoption models. Rainer Lienhart has always been an active contributor to OpenCV. From August 1998 to July 2004 he was a Staff Researcher at Intel's Microprocessor Research Lab in Santa Clara, California, where he worked on transforming a network of heterogeneous, distributed computing platforms into an array of audio/video sensors and actuators capable of performing complex DSP tasks such as distributed beamforming, audio rendering, audio/visual tracking, and camera array processing. In particular, this requires putting distributed heterogeneous computing platforms with audio -visual sensors into a common time and space coordinate system. At the same time, he was also continuing his work on media mining, where he is well known for his work in video content analysis with contributions in text detection/recognition, commercial detection, face detection (see also here), shot and scene detection, and automatic video abstraction. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Mannheim, Germany, in 1998, where he was a member of the Movie Content Analysis Project (MoCA). The scientific work of Rainer Lienhart covers more than 80 refereed publications and more than 20+ patents. He was a general co-chair of ACM Multimedia 2007 and SPIE Storage and Retrieval of Media Databases 2004 & 2005. He serves in the editorial boards of 3 international journals. For more than a decade he is a committee member of ACM Multimedia, IEEE ICME, SPIE Storage and Retrieval of Media Databases, and many more conferences. Since July 2009 he is the vice chair of SIGMM. He is also the executive director of the Institute for Computer Science at the University of Augsburg since April 2010.

  Yao Wang

  Yao Wang is a recognized expert in video coding, networked video applications, medical imaging, and pattern recognition. She joined the faculty of Polytechnic Institute of New York University in 1990 as an assistant professor and became an associate professor in 1996 and a professor in 2000. Wang received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University in Bejing, China in 1983 and 1985, respectively, and a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1990. She authored the well-known textbook Video Processing and Communications in addition to writing numerous book chapters and journal articles. She has also served as the associate editor of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Transactions on Multimedia and Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. Wang was elected a Fellow of the IEEE for her contributions to video processing and communications. She is a recipient of the New York City Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Science and Technology, Young Investigator Category; co-recipient of the IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Prize Paper in the Field of Communications Systems; the Overseas Outstanding Young Investigator Award from the Natural Science Foundation of China; and the Yangtze River Lecture Scholar by the Ministry of Education in China.

  Dr. Jaimes is a scientist and innovator with 15+ years of international experience in research and product impact (AiCure, Yahoo, KAIST, Telefonica, IDIAP-EPFL, Fuji Xerox, IBM, Siemens, and AT&T Bell Labs). He has worked in the USA, Japan, Chile, Switzerland, Spain, and South Korea. Dr. Jaimes has a Ph.D. from Columbia University. AiCure is a VC-funded startup that leverages mobile technology by combining it with Artificial Intelligence (Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Big Data) to encourage patients to take their medication and to verify that they are taking the right medication at the right time. At Yahoo he managed teams of scientists and engineers in Barcelona, Bangalore, Sunnyvale, and New York City. I set the research strategy, and directly contributed to several Yahoo products including Yahoo News, Image and Video search, Flickr, and others. Dr. Jaimes designs and builds applications, working on Human-Centered Computing, at the intersection of data science [behavioral insights], user experience [interaction, multimedia, design], and business, combining quantitative and qualitative methods for innovation. His work has been widely published and he is a frequent speaker at international conferences worldwide.

  Dr. Benoit Huet is Assistant Professor in the multimedia information processing group of Eurecom (France). He received his BSc degree in computer science and engineering from the École Supérieure de Technologie Électrique (Groupe ESIEE, France) in 1992. In 1993, he was awarded the MSc degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Westminster (UK) with distinction, where he then spent two years working as a research and teaching assistant. He received his DPhil degree in Computer Science from the University of York (UK) for his research on the topic of object recognition from large databases. He was awarded the HDR (Habilitation to Direct Research) from the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, France, in October 2012 on the topic of Multimedia Content Understanding: Bringing Context to Content. He is associate editor for IEEE Multimedia, Multimedia Tools and Application (Springer) and Multimedia Systems (Springer) and has been guest editor for many special issues (EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing, IEEE Multimedia, IEEE Trans. on Multimedia, etc..).   Professor Kiyoharu Aizawa received the B.E., the M.E. and the Dr.E. in electrical engineering all from the University of Tokyo in 1983, 1985, 1988 respectively. He is currently a Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Engineering of the University of Tokyo. He was a visiting assistant professor at University of Illinois from 1990 to 1992. His research interests have been in image coding, processing and multimedia applications, and he is currently engaged in multimedia lifelog and other multimedia related subjects. He received the 1987 Young Engineer Award and the 1990, 1998 Best Paper Award, the 1991 Achievement Award, 1999 Electronics Society Award, Fellow award 2012 from IEICE Japan, and the 1998 Fujio Frontier Award the 2002, 2005, 2009 Best Paper Award from ITE Japan. He received IBM Japan Science Prize 2002. He is currently an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans.   Balakrishnan Prabhakaran

  Dr. B. Prabhakaran is Professor of of Computer Science, in the University of Texas at Dallas. Prof B. Prabhakaran works in the area of multimedia systems. Currently, he is focusing on: (i) video and health-care data analytics; (ii) streaming of 3D video, animations, and deformable 3D models; (iii) content protection and authentication of multimedia objects; (iv) Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for streaming multimedia data in wireless adhoc and mesh networks; and (v) collaborative virtual environments. In the past, he has worked on multimedia databases, authoring & presentation, resource management, and scalable web-based multimedia presentation servers. He has published several research papers in prestigious conferences and journals in this area. Dr. Prabhakaran received the prestigious NSF CAREER Award FY 2003 for his proposal on Animation Databases. Dr. Prabhakaran is General Co-Chair of ACM Multimedia 2011. He is also Technical Program Co-Chair of IEEE WoWMoM 2012 (World of Wireless, Mobile, and Multimedia Networks). He served as the TPC Co-Chair of IEEE ISM 2010 (International Symposium on Multimedia). Dr Prabhakaran is a Member of the Executive Council of the ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) and is the Co-Chair of IEEE Technical Committe on Multimedia Computing (TCMC) Special Interest Group on Video Analytics (SIGVA).   Gang Hua is a Senior Research Manager at Microsoft Research Asia. He also holds a Visiting Professor position at Stevens Institute of Technology. His research focuses on computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, and robotics, with primary applications in the cloud and mobile intelligence domain. Before he came back to Microsoft Research, he was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology between 2011 and 2015.   Mr. Nguyen is a Senior Software Engineer in the Cognitive Computing department at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. He received a B.S. degree and an Engineering degree in computer sciences from the Conservatoire des Arts and Metiers, Paris (1987) and a post-graduate diploma (DESS) from Pierre and Marie Curie University, Paris (1988). He joined IBM in 1997 at the IBM T. J.   Matthew Hill is a Senior Software Engineer in the Intelligent Information Systems Department at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center. He earned a B.A. degree in computer science from Cornell University, and an M.S. degree in computer science from Columbia University. Prior to IBM, he worked for Cognex Corp. on software for industrial machine vision applications. In 1998, he joined IBM Research and has been a longtime contributor to IMARS (IBM Multimedia Analytics and Retrieval System) as well as other image-related projects such as invisible watermarking and content-based copy detection of video sequences. His work has earned several IBM awards and resulted in many patents and peer-reviewed publications. Recently he has adapted the IMARS scoring system to scale up to big-data, high-throughput applications using the IBM InfoSphere Streams platform.

  Felix X. Yu is researcher at Google. He received his PhD from the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Columbia University in 2015. His advisor is Prof. Shih-Fu Chang. Before Columbia, Yu received his Bachelor's degree from Dept. of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, China, in 2010. Yu is interested in learning with weak supervisions, and making representation learning faster and meaningful. His works have been recognized by the IBM PhD Fellowship Award (2014-2015), the Facebook PhD Fellowship Finalist Award (2014), the ACM Multimedia Best Paper Award (2011), and the ACM ICMR Best Paper Award (2014).   Michele Merler is a Research Staff Member in the Multimedia Research Group at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in telecommunications engineering from the University of Trento, Italy, in 2001 and 2004, respectively, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Columbia Universityin 2008 and 2012, respectively. He subsequently joined IBM at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, where he has worked on multimedia indexing and retrieval.
